24/7’s FUN IN THE SUN – FIONNULA WINS AT GARTAN CHALLENGE, TRIATHY, DERRY MARATHON, SWIMMING ADVENTURES AND MUCH MORE!

SSE Airtricity Derry Marathon
John Daly competed in the SSE Airtricity Walled City Derry Marathon on Sunday. Despite the very warm conditions John had a brilliant race finishing with a fantastic time of 3:26. Well done John.

Triathy
Alastair and Sheral Hetherington travelled to Athy over the weekend for the Triathy events. Alaistair took on the Double Olympic distance event ahead of his Ironman later this year. Alaistair had a superb race and finished in a time of 6:04:05.
Sheral took on the Try a Tri event finishing in 1:39:47, well done to both!

VHI Woman’s Mini Marathon
Georgina Dill travelled to Dublin for the VHI Woman’s Mini Marathon on Sunday. Another race ran in very warm conditions Georgina finished with a great 10k PB time of 58:34.

Gartan Adventure Race
On Saturday 247 members raced the Gartan Adventure Race. Pat Brady was (just about!) first 24/7 member to finish the long course in 2:23:03. On his tail with just .04 of a second separating them was our female winner of the course Fionnuala Larkin in a superb time of 2:23:07. Indeed, Brady had his work well cut out for him to try and pip Fionnuala on the line with Fionnuala taking a big lead on the kayak leg. Barry Foley also took on the long course and had a great race finishing in 2:36:36.

In the short course race Shaun Logue was 6th overall in a brilliant time of 1:37:12. Fresh from her Try a Tri success Kathyrn McDevitt also had a brilliant race finishing in       1:58:12. Well done to everyone especially to Fionnuala on her win!

Metalman Swim Series Round 1
The first round of the Metalman swim series took place on Saturday. In the 1k Sprint distance Paddy Bond finished in a brilliant time of 17:23. In the 1.5k long course event Karen Crawford had a great swim finishing in a time of 23:11.

Crana Swim Series Round 2
Round 2 of the Crana Swim Series took place on Friday night. In much nicer swimming conditions than the previous week competitors took on a 2.6k course. Jonathan Martin was the winner in a fantastic time of   28:27, over 4 and a half minutes ahead of his nearest competitor.
Niamh McDaid was first female for the second week in a row and had another brilliant swim finishing in 34:24. Fergus Callaghan was just behind her in 34:26.
Anthony Delap had another good swim finishing in 36:44, Patrick Patton finished in 37:16.
Anne Robinson was 3rd female overall with a brilliant time of 38:56.  Paddy Bond swam well also, finishing in 41:16, ahead of his 1k race in the Metalman series the following day. Elaine Gallagher finished in 43:51. Martina O’Donnell on her first time racing such a distance in the open water had a great time of 44:41. Fiona Gibbons had another fine swim finishing in 45:31. Well done everyone. The final race of the series takes place this Saturday.

Galdonagh Bike Race
Ciarán mc Gettigan and Shaun McDaid were both in action at the 4Masters Galdonagh bike race on Tuesday evening. Ciarán making a breakaway with powerhouse rider Odhran Doogan on lap 1, Odhran winning the sprint and Ciarán settling for 2nd. Shaun McDaid displayed a powerful sprint to win the bunch finish and rounding off the podium.

Dromara cc Festival of Races
On Saturday 2nd June Daniel and Ciarán mc Gettigan travelled to Bishops Court Racing Circuit in Co. Down for the Dromara cc festival of races. Daniel had 3 laps of the 2.1 mile circuit came home in 8th position. In the U12s , Ciarán had 10 laps to do and finished 3rd in his hard Fought U16s race .

Bike 2 BBQ Event Monday 11th June
The club, in association with Donegal Sports Partnership and Donegal County Council, will be holding a Bike 2 BBQ event next Monday night 11th June at 7.30pm in conjunction with Bike Safety week. It will be based at Gartan. It’s a small event, open to everyone, kids and adults. There will be a short route for the kids in the grounds of Gartan and a bike safety talk. This is a fun event, admission is free and we would love to see you all get involved after your swim session and staying on for some fun. More details to follow later in the week. Anyone willing to help out with marshalling please give me Fiona/Gavin a PM, it would be much appreciated!

Swimming at Downings
For anyone that is swimming at Downings- there is NO swim entry at the pier. You must enter the water by the beach only. There are buoys out and the pier area is a no swimming zone.

Gartan Open Water Swimming
Gartan open water swimming sessions take place each Monday @ 6.30pm.  All members are reminded that swimming in the lake on a Monday night is from 6.30pm and you must exit the water no later than 7.30.pm.  All members must sign in and out of the water.  This year there will be a designated swim course set up by Gartan Outdoor and this will be the only area members will be allowed to swim in.  We will have kayak cover in the water and a marshal on the shore.  Wetsuits, and bright swim caps are COMPULSARY and anyone who is not a confident swimmer is urged to use a swim buoy.

Club training continues as follows:
Monday: Open Water swim session will commence Monday 21st May @ 6.30pm.
Tuesday:  Road based session 6.30pm from Aura
Wednesday: Swim session- Beginners 7-8pm, All others 8-9pm
Thursday:  Brick Session 7pm sharp from Foxhall

Saturday: Club cycle leaves from Aura at 8am
Saturday: Club swim session Saturday at 6pm Additional lane added for 14-16yr old club members- MUST be accompanied by a parent (please note prepayment does not cover Saturday swim)
