24/7 – HOME OF NATIONAL SPRINT CHAMPIONS!!

Firmus City of Derry Triathlon- National Sprint Championships
A convoy of 24/7competitors departed Letterkenny in the early hours of Sunday morning to make their way to the maiden city for the 2017 Firmus Sprint Triathlon. Competition was high on the day with a huge field of impressive competitors. The murky waters of the River Foyle and windy conditions on the day failed to dampen the spirits of the 35 24/7 members who took to the start line.
Siobhan Gallagher was 4th female overall in the Cat1 event finishing in an excellent time of 1:09:28. Siobhan was just 1 second away from a podium finish, pipped on the line by Laura Wylie.
John Connaghan was the first 24/7 competitor to cross the line in the age category event. John finished 3rd in the M55-59 category in a time of 1:08:06- just 1second away from 2nd place. Indeed, just 30 seconds separated 1st and 3rd in this hugely competitive category.
The ladies of the club continue to excel- we now have 2 national champions in the club as well as 3 others taking home age category medals. Following on from her success in Barcelona 70.3, Margaret Kelly was crowned national champion finishing 1st in her age category in a time of 1:13:33. Anne Robinson was also crowned National champion -winning her F35-39 category in a time of 1:18:47. Anne exited the water after a superb swim of 11:33 and continued to excel throughout the bike and run course.
Following on from her successful duathlon season Natasha Kelly finished 2nd in the F20-24 category in a time of 1:19:11 showing great promise for the tri season ahead. Niamh McDaid finished 3rd in the F25-29 in 1:22:26, a strong swim and great run off the bike for Niamh. As always Kate Black put in an excellent performance Kate was 3rd in the F16-19 age category with a time of 1:26:12.
The club as a whole had super performances from everyone who took part, too many to mention, the results below speak for themselves. A special mention must go to all those who competed in their first open water sprint triathlon-Phillip Browne, Alastair Hetherington, Terence Quinn, Christopher Callaghan, Niamh Gibbons, Karol Harvey, Maeve Carr and Raj Mehan and to John Daly who despite suffering a puncture managed to finish! Unfortunately after a great swim Padraic Mitchell suffered a puncture on the bike course and was unable to finish.
A huge thank you also to our fellow clubmates, family and friends who lined the banks of the Foyle to support us despite the weather conditions. Everyone appreciated your cheers and shouts throughout the course.

White Bear Triathlon
As well as competing in Saturdays half ironman and cheering on his club mates in Derry on Sunday Cathal Roarty still found the time to provide the race report below for the White Bear event.
Five club members lined up on Saturday in Ballygalley outside Larne for the inaugural White Bear triathlon. There were three races-a sprint, half ironman and a full Ironman- all 24/7 members opting for the half ironman event. The race started at 7am and Rose Leith -a good friend to the club was first person out of the Irish sea. Club chairman Nick Fowell was 6th but an excellent cycle left him first out of transition after the 90k cycle. He was caught in the ensuing half marathon but held on to finish in second place.
Jarlath Duffy had a blowout but help was at hand and his wife Marnie organised a spare and so he completed the course inside the cutoff time even with a two-hour delay. Damian McGoohan thought 90k was not a long enough cycle so he did an extra 10k. Cathal Roarty and Patrick McNulty were very grateful to John Connaghan for his support around the course.
A special mention to Gerry Kelly a former club member who was 3rdin the full distance race. Both the cycle and run were very hilly but everyone enjoyed the day. There were a few teething problems but this race is one be considered in the future.

Metalman Swim Series Round 2 Long Distance 1500m
Patrick Patton led the 24/7 competitors in Sligo on Saturday finishing the 1.5k event in 21.:20. Karen Crawford was just 16seconds behind in 21:36. Karen has it all to play for in the 3rd round on July 1st- she is currently second overall with 2 others. Ailbhe Dunne completed the 1.5k course in 26:37 with Elaine Gallagher in 26:43 – excellent swimming from both girls on their first event at this distance.
