Triathlon season has well and truly kicked off for 247 members with lots of members competing in a variety of events over the weekend.

Barcelona 70.3
Paddy McNulty travelled to Calella, Barcelona, to represent and compete in the Ironman 70.3 Tri Club championships over the weekend.
Known for its beautiful location at the “Costa del Maresme” and its distinctive lighthouse landmark, Calella is renowned as a tourism and sport hotspot and the Barcelona 70.3 has become a very popular 70.3 location.  Paddy performed brilliantly and finished in a time of 6:00:26 despite the blistering heat finishing his race with a sub 2hour half marathon. Well done Paddy and enjoy the rest of your holiday.


Eunisure Liam Ball Sprint Triathlon
247 was well represented in the annual Eunisure Liam Ball Sprint Triathlon hosted by our neighbours North West Triathlon Club on Sunday.
Sean McFadden , not long home from a week of warm weather training with Errigal cycling club, was first club member to finish, 6th overall and 2nd in the M40-49 in a superb time of 1:04:50.  Michael Russell had a brilliant race finishing in 1:14:57. Shaun Logue made an impressive return to triathlon racing crossing the line in a brilliant 1:24:10. Fresh from his super sprint debut Brian Gormley performed very well finishing in 1:28:08. Christy Callaghan, 247’s 2017 best male newcomer award winner, kick started his triathlon season with a brilliant time of 1:38:05. Suzanne Bogan was the only 247 female to take on the Liam Ball challenge. Suzanne making a welcome return to triathlon with a 1:44:07 time. Well done to all competitors.


Tri 795 Carlow (Intervarsity National Championships)
The first race of the BMW Triathlon National Series campaign was held in Carlow over the weekend.  The race was also the venue for the Intervarsity Championships.
Taking the Bronze medal (just 8 seconds separated silver and bronze) in the Intervarsity Champs, Christine Russell finished 7th female overall and 1st F20-24 in her return to triathlon racing. Christine had a brilliant performance, with a superb swim of 11:24, a very strong cycle and a 20:28 run split
Orlaith Fogarty  also performed brilliantly. Orlaith again with a superb swim of 11:10 crossed the line in 1:21:18.


National Post Primary School Championships 2018
More than 70 of the country’s best teenage triathletes raced at the National Post Primary Schools Championships in Naas, Co. Kildare over the weekend. All athletes had qualified through regional heats making competition very exciting! Athletes raced across four categories, with distances varying according to age.
In the Senior category, Ben Carr finished 3rd winning the bronze medal finishing in a time of 38:04 Ben with a 9:13 run split- the fastest of the day!
Billy Black also had a brilliant race. Billy took part in the Junior Race finishing strongly in a time of 33:49. There will be lots more Junior success to come for both brilliant athletes no doubt!

Ulster Schools 1500 Track
Ben Carr was also in action on Saturday. Ben finished 3rd overall in the 1500m track event.

Sailfish Lanzarote Open Water Swim
Well done to John Connaghan who competed in the 1.9km Sailfish Lanzarote Open Water Swim event in Lanzarote over the weekend. John finished in a time of 32:07.

5k Action
The club had 26 members take part in the annual Interfirms 5k on Tuesday night.
Gavin Crawford was first 247 member to cross the line in 16:39. Christine Russell was first 247 female crossing the line in 18:37. There was some fantastic running from 247 members. Well done to all who achieved PBs on the night.
Paddy McGee was first 247 member, 9th overall in Thursdays Trentagh 5k with a brilliant time of 18:31.
Niamh McDaid  made an impressive start to her 5k season with a brilliant time of 21:15, finishing 2nd Female in the Trentagh 5k on Thursday. Well done to all who took part.
Well done also to Caroline McCabe who raced in the Cappry Rovers Joe Houston Memorial 5k.

Gartan Open Water Swimming
Gartan open water swimming sessions will commence on Monday 21st May @ 6.30pm.
Anyone who has not swam in the open water before or who is nervous, is asked to please come along as there will be an open water swim safety induction on Monday night.
All members are reminded that swimming in the lake on a Monday night is from 6.30pm and you must exit the water no later than  All members must sign in and out of the water. This year there will be a designated swim course set up by Gartan Outdoor and this will be the only area members will be allowed to swim in.  We will have kayak cover in the water and a marshal on the shore.  Wetsuits, and bright swim caps are COMPULSARY and anyone who is not a confident swimmer is urged to use a swim buoy.

Members swim series
Full details on the upcoming Members only swim series will be confirmed this week and sent to all club members.

Transition Training
There will be transition training held at Foxhall this Thursday 24th May at 7pm for any members who are interested. It will replace this week’s brick session. Please ensure you are ready to go at 7pm sharp for this.

Club Training

Club training continues as follows:

Monday: Open Water swim session will commence Monday 21st May @ 6.30pm.

Tuesday:  Road based session 6.30pm from Aura

Wednesday: Swim session- Beginners 7-8pm, All others 8-9pm

Thursday:  Transition Training at Foxhall 7pm sharp

Saturday: Club cycle leaves from Aura at 8am

Saturday: Club swim session Saturday at 6pm Additional lane added for 14-16yr old club members- MUST be accompanied by a parent (please note prepayment does not cover Saturday swim)
