Last weekend saw an exodus from the club to take part in Hell of the West in Kilkee Co. Clare and the Challenge Galway races based in Galway city. Four women members swept the boards in the try a tri event with them placing in the first four.
On Sunday three of the more experienced women all raced well. Margaret Kelly, Clara Quigley and Fin Begley all finished on the podium for their respective age groups in the Challenge Galway 70.3
Also on Sunday The full Iron man saw five members take part with club chairman Nick Fowell leading the way. This was despite having a puncture and cycling the last 5km on a flat wheel. John Conaghan also did well and there were fine debut performances from Gerry Kelly and Jarlath Duffy. An Iron man is the ultimate triathlon event featuring a 3.8. k swim 180k cycle and 42.2k run. The triathletes were in the water at six fifteen am on Sunday morning otherwise known as stupid o clock.
Gavin Crawford led the club members home in the half ironman with some strong showings in difficult conditions.
Locally Jason Black was second in the Ultra cycle race with the Robinson family performing well in the team event and Matthew Mc Kinley doing well in the pairs race.
In the super series Olympic race in Kilkee Siobhan Gallagher finished tenth with Triona Mc Menamin unable to complete the run.
Ben George and Kieran Liddy competed in the ordinary Olympic event .
The club is continuing with it’s preparation for the Olympic and sprint race on the 9th of July. Race director Liam Tinney has made some changes to the course opting for a flatter more scenic route for bot h the five k and ten k run part of the event. Entry details are on the triathlon Ireland website with numbers capped for safety reasons.
