IRONMAN LANZE, LOUGH CULTRA SUCCESS, HIT THE WALL AND CRANA SWIM SERIOUS

Race season has well and truly begun- 24/7 competitors took part in an array of events over the weekend- well done everyone.

Ironman Lanzarote
John Connaghan took on the Ironman Lanzarote challenge at the weekend. Ironman Lanza is one of the longest-standing races in Europe. On race day, the event’s two-lap swim course takes place at Playa Grande, Puerto del Carmen, the main tourist place of the island. The bike course, new route in 2018, is well known for challenging athletes with strong winds, and leads athletes around the island with over 2551 meters of climbing. Despite suffering from a hip injury John finished in a brilliant time of 12:43:29, finishing 20th overall in the M55-59 category. Well done John.

Lough Cultra Castle Triathlon
Siobhan Gallagher travelled to Galway on Sunday for the National Series Standard distance event at Lough Cultra Castle Triathlon. Siobhan had a superb race finishing 2nd overall, winning the F25-29 category in a time of 2:29:30. A brilliant performance from Siobhan!

Hit the Wall- Battle of Carlingford Lough Swim
Well done to Karen Crawford and Lester Speer who took on the Battle of Carlingford Lough 7.5k sea swim over the weekend at the Hit the Wall Swim weekend. Karen completed the 7.5k swim in a superb time of                 2:15. Lester completed the swim in 2:55- a massive achievement for Lester, who before Saturday had never swam more than 3k in the sea.

Runher Half Marathon
Well done to Fiona Temple who took part in the Runher Coastal Half Marathon in Bangor on Friday. Fiona had a brilliant PB time of 1:56:20.

Crana Swim Series- Race 1
The first of the Crana Swim Series took place on Friday evening at Lisfannon Beach. Due to the challenging conditions the decision was made to shorten the course for health and safety reasons.
Fergus Callaghan was the first 24/7 member to finish in a time of 22:00 with Niamh McDaid, first 24/7 female hot on his tail in 22:01.  Anthony Delap finished in 22:18 with Patrick Patton close behind in 22:21. Anne Robinson had a great swim finishing in 23:28. Karol Harvey made a welcome return to racing with a great time of 24:06. Paddy Bond finished in 26:14, Fiona Gibbons in 31:19 and Martina O’Donnell finished in 31:37. Well done everyone on a tough night for swimming. The next swim takes place this Friday 1st June.

Skoda Tour of Connemara
Well done to Shaun McDaid, Jonathan Edwards, Martina McDaid and Cathy Harvey who completed the Skoda Tour of Connemara on Saturday. Shaun and Jonathan took on the 140k route while Martina and Cathy took on the 80k route.

Junior Round-up
24/7 Youth Ciarán Mc Gettigan has won his second A4 bike race in succession in Cranford and in Ballyliffin in the North West Inter Club League. In against the adults Ciaran made the breakaway in both races and won the sprint at the finish. He will now be upgraded to the A Race next time out. His steady start to the racing season has resulted in him being selected to ride for Ulster as part of a 4 male and 4 Female U16 team which will travel to England on June 29th to race in the Youth Tour of London.
24/7 Junior Ben Carr competed in the Carmen Runners A 1Mile Road Relays at the weekend. Ben was 3rd overall in 04:39, winning Team Gold with FVAC.
Billy Black was in action at the Community games Finals over the weekend taking 4th place in the duathlon event.

5K roundup
247 had 11 competitors taking part in the very hot Furey Insurance Buncrana 5k last Tuesday.
Gavin Crawford was the first 24/7 member to cross the line in 16:25. Natasha Kelly was first 24/7 female to finish in a brilliant time of 19:26.
Well done to Liam Tinney, Jonathan Edwards, Keith Fletcher, Pat Brady and Martina O’Donnell who all achieved PB’s on the night.
Well done to Georgina Dill on her PB time of 26:28 at the Drumoghill 5K and Ryan Browne who crossed the line in 26:40.

Swimming at Downings
For anyone that is swimming at Downings- there is NO swim entry at the pier. You must enter the water by the beach only. There are buoys out and the pier area is a no swimming zone.

Gartan Open Water Swimming
Gartan open water swimming sessions take place each Monday @ 6.30pm.  All members are reminded that swimming in the lake on a Monday night is from 6.30pm and you must exit the water no later than 7.30.pm.  All members must sign in and out of the water.  This year there will be a designated swim course set up by Gartan Outdoor and this will be the only area members will be allowed to swim in.  We will have kayak cover in the water and a marshal on the shore.  Wetsuits, and bright swim caps are COMPULSARY and anyone who is not a confident swimmer is urged to use a swim buoy.

Club Training
Club training continues as follows:

Monday: Open Water swim session will commence Monday 21st May @ 6.30pm.

Tuesday:  Road based session 6.30pm from Aura

Wednesday: Swim session- Beginners 7-8pm, All others 8-9pm

Thursday:  TT session 7pm sharp from Foxhall

Saturday: Club cycle leaves from Aura at 8am

Saturday: Club swim session Saturday at 6pm Additional lane added for 14-16yr old club members- MUST be accompanied by a parent (please note prepayment does not cover Saturday swim)
