Ironman World Championship
Aidan Callaghan made his World championship debut in Kona Hawaii. We had another interest in the race as Bryan Mc Crystal who won our Olympic race as a warm up race for iron Man Bolton also took part. Aidan finished 89th in his age group and 383rd overall. He swam very well swimming the 3.8k swim in 54 minutes and averaged 36.8kmh on the 180k cycle dealing with cross winds and head winds but found the heat hard to cope with on the marathon portion of the race. Everyone was glued to the race which started 6.00 pm our time with Aidan completing the course in a credible time of 9.54.06. He had able support from Wife to be Catherine Regan as well as from his parents Christy and Maeve. Bryan Mc Crystal was best of the Irish in a time of 9.12.08 thanks in the main to a superb bike time of 4.29.14. Aidan’s splits were 54.05, 5.07.57 and 3.43.29.
Jan Frodeno of Germany defended his professional title with splits of 48.02 ,4.29.34 and 2.45.34 finishing in 8.06.30
Phillip Browne ran the three quarters marathon in Athlone in a time of 2.33.17 finishing with a negative split which augurs well for him for the Dublin Marathon at the end of the month.
In the Donegal Cross country race held in Fanad , Natasha Kelly was second woman home with Siobhan Gallagher fourth. Siobhan was part of the silver winning Letterkenny Athletics team. Well done to both women.
Liam Tinney was part of the Gold winning team from Letterkenny Athletics club in the mens race.
