NATIONAL SERIES AND GARTAN SWIM WINS FOR 24/7!

Caroline Kearney
John Connaghan travelled to Lilliput in Mullingar for the annual Caroline Kearney Memorial Triathlon on Saturday last. Due to the lake at Lilliput being a no swim zone the National Series event was changed from a triathlon to a duathlon event. John Connaghan had a superb performance and finished in a time of 2:13:47 picking up 1st place prize in the M55-59 category.

Lough Neagh Triathlon
Four 24/7 club members travelled to Ballyronan, Co.Derry for the Lough Neagh National Series Triathlon. Pauric Kelly was the first 24/7 to cross the finish line with a fantastic time of 2:29:58. Fin Begley is having a great season in the National Series and Saturday was no different. Fin was 4th woman overall in a superb time of 2:36:14 topping the F45-49 age category. Bronagh O’Gara wasn’t far behind- Bronagh finished in 5th position in a brilliant 2:37:46. Bronagh also picked up 1st place prize in her F40-44 age category. Paul O’Gara had another fine performance in the National series; Paul crossed the line in a time of  2:40:36.

 Waterways Ireland Athy Family Aquathon
Sean and his son Ruairi McFadden travelled to Athy in Kildare on their last weekend in Donegal before they and were winners of the Waterways family Aquathon. Sean and his family jetted off to Dubai on their adventure on Tuesday. Everyone at 24/7 wishes the McFadden family the best of luck on their adventures.

Gartan Swim Challenge
Thirty six club members took to the familiar waters of Gartan Lake for the annual Gartan Swim Challenge organized by Gartan Open Water Swimmers. With 3 different distances on offer on the day everyone was catered for and the feedback for the event was nothing but good! In the 3.5k event Siobhan Gallagher was the winner in a superb swim time of 46:10. Fergus Callaghan was the second 24/7 to finish in a great time of 53:19 Eadaoin Kelly also had a very strong swim with a superb time of 55:22. There were also great swims in the 3.5k distance from Niamh McDaid, 56:27, Patrick Patton, 59:12, Graham Parker, 1:00:31, Martin Robinson, 1:06:59, Paddy Doherty, 1:09:53, Karol Harvey, 1:10:22, Louise Alcorn, 1:11:44, Fiona Gibbons, 1:17:05, Julie McBride, 1:17:19 and Paul McNulty in 1:17:38.  In the 1k event there were 24/7 winners in the both the male and female categories. Jonathan Martin had a superb swim of 12:40 to take 1st place, over 2 minutes ahead of his nearest competitor. In second place overall was Tracey Gallagher in a brilliant    14:49 winning the prize for 1st Female. The third 24/7 competitor to cross the line was Shane McNulty with a brilliant swim time of 17:01. Again in the 1k distance 24/7 had some brilliant performances with Anthony Delap, 17:30, Aoibheann O’Grady, 18:11, Kevin Hennessy, 19:08, Pauric Mitchell, 19:28 all completing the course in less than 20 minutes. Brian Gormley, 20:47, Marnie Duffy, 21:06, Bridie Devenney, 22:09, Amanda Witherow, 22:41, Gavin Ward, 22:46, Christy Callaghan      , 23:16, Terence Quinn,    23:39, Suzanne Bogan, 23:50, Chloe Wasson, 24:58,Peter McLean, 25:48 and Mary Bond, 27:20, all had very good performances.  In the 500m swim event junior member Roise Robinson had a super swim to finish 3rd female in a time of 10:10. Junior Maoliosa McCabe also had a great time, finishing strongly in 14:53. Sheral Hetherington and Carol McCabe also swam well with Sheral finishing in a time of 14:56 and Carol in 15:38.

Trentagh Fun Day Bike Race
There were five 24/7 members in action in Sunday’s Trentagh Fun Day Bike Race. Junior Ciaran McGettigan was winner of the B race with Fergus Callaghan just seconds behind in 2nd. Shaun McDaid finished in 4th. In the C race Enda Carr finished in 5th position and Paddy Doherty who was pacing finished in 14th.

Ballyare 10k
In Friday night’s Ballyare 10k Gavin Crawford had an incredible run. Gavin is showing great running form ahead of Octobers Dublin marathon and he finished in 2nd position in a time of 34:50. Sean McFadden also ran well crossing the line in 37:26. Paddy McGee also ran sub 40, finishing in brilliant time of  39:53.  Martin Temple  ran well finishing in 47:25 with Paddy Doherty just 30 seconds behind in 47:55.

Saturday Swim Sessions
Saturday swim sessions will resume on Saturday 15th September.

Kayak Volunteers for Monday swim sessions
If any club members are available for Kayak cover over the next few weeks please contact Anne Robinson. Having extra water safety allows all swimmers to gain some valuable open water experience.

Gartan Open Water Swimming
Gartan open water swimming sessions take place each Monday @ 6.30pm.  All members are reminded that swimming in the lake on a Monday night is from 6.30pm and you must exit the water no later than 7.30.pm.  All members must sign in and out of the water.  This year there will be a designated swim course set up by Gartan Outdoor and this will be the only area members will be allowed to swim in.  We will have kayak cover in the water and a marshal on the shore.  Wetsuits, and bright swim caps are COMPULSORY and anyone who is not a confident swimmer is urged to use a swim buoy.

Tuesday:  Road based session 6.30pm SHARP from Foxhall until further notice
Wednesday: Swim session- Beginners 7-8pm, All others 8-9pm
Thursday:  Brick session 7pm sharp@Foxhall

Saturday: Club cycle from Aura at 8am
Saturday:  Due to decreasing numbers Sat swim sessions have been cancelled for the Summer months. PLEASE NOTE: Sessions will resume Saturday 15th September
