NATIONAL SERIES, LAKESIDE TRI & MAD ADVENTURE RACE SILVERWARE FOR 24/7!

Submitted by Fiona McDaid

It was another action- packed weekend for club members and yet more silverware with some very impressive racing all over the country. Well done everyone.

Belfast Titanic Standard Distance NS Triathlon
Six of our club members travelled to Belfast for the National Series Titanic triathlon on Sunday morning. In near perfect racing conditions in Belfast’s Titanic Quarter Aidan Callaghan dominated from start to finish. He led from the off, a 20:04 swim left him exiting the water in 1st place onto the bike course where he only maximized his lead before finishing off with a superb 10k run of 33:29 to cross the finish line in 1st place in a time of 1:52:53.

In the ladies race it went down to the wire. Siobhan Gallagher led the race coming into T1 with a superb swim of 20:40 and held that lead into T2. Despite a super 10k run from Siobhan, Laura Wylie pipped her on the run course with 2km to go. Siobhan finished in a fantastic time of 2:08:54, 2nd female.

John Connaghan was back in national series action again with another fine performance of 2:14:50 over the standard distance event. Bronagh O’Gara had another great race, picking up 2nd F40-44 in a time of 2:23:12. Just 15 seconds separated Bronagh and husband Paul who finished in 2:23:27, Bronagh pipping Paul on the 10k run. Fin Begley also got her hands on silverware putting in a strong performance with a finish time of 2:26:25 to pick up 2nd in the F45-49 category.

Lakeside Sprint Triathlon
Closer to home on Saturday twelve members crossed the gap to take part in the Lakeside Sprint Triathlon hosted by MSC Triathlon club in Ballyshannon.
Sean McFadden was the first club member to cross the finish line in 1:12:18, 9th overall.
Christine Russell showed she is in super form claiming silverware once again. Christine had another superb performance finishing in          1:18:12, 2nd Female overall. Jonathan Edwards was back in racing action after his recent Sheephaven Half race. Jonathan had a great performance finishing very strongly with a 20:32 5k to cross the line in 1:21:52. Geoff McGillian also put in a good performance finishing in 1:26:32 just ahead of his club-mate Cathal Gorman who crossed the line in 1:27:05. New club member Karl Bonner            also performed well finishing in 1:29:13. Patrick Patton made a welcome return to triathlons putting in a great performance to finish in 1:31:47. Gavin Ward also raced well crossing the line in 1:32:58. Kevin Hennessy has definitely caught the triathlon bug again, just a week since his Gartan return taking on another sprint triathlon finishing in 1:33:15. Conor McLaughlin was back in action also with a great race of 1:36:32. Sandra Devine had another fine performance crossing the line in 1:38:18 just 4 seconds ahead of Terence Quinn in 1:38:22.

MAD Adventure Race Long Course
Elsewhere on Saturday 24/7 members took on the local MAD Adventure race. A hugely popular race ran by Hugh Coll and co in Milford, competitors had a choice of either the long 59k or the 29k sprint course.
Taking on the long course event Gavin Crawford was the first 24/7 member to cross the line finishing 7thoverall in a fantastic time of 2:41:46. Gavin had a superb 10k run and a noticeably improved kayak time (quicker than some of his slagging club-mates!!) to finish strongly in 7th position.
Lisa Dalton also had a superb performance. Although she was over 2minutes behind Sonia Knox after the 10k run she put in very strong kayak and bike splits to take the lead and finish in a brilliant 3:01:48 picking up the prize for 1st Female with almost 3 minutes to spare on second place Knox in the end.
Mark Rodgers had a brilliant race crossing the line in a super time of 3:07:18, well up in the field. It was a game of tit for tat with the next trio but Fionnuala Larkin showed her experience in adventure racing to pip Liam Tinney. Fionnuala posting super kayak and bike splits to finish just 20seconds ahead of Liam Tinney in 3:08:32, picking up the prize for 3rd Female overall ,2nd FO. Their training buddy Pat Brady wasn’t too far behind crossing the line in a brilliant 3:10:25. Enda Carr put in another strong performance finishing in 3:18:08.
