July 1st 2024 Club Notes:
Sheephaven 70.3 AND SPRINT 2024
The Letterkenny Triathlon Club had an incredibly successful day of triathlon competition in Downing’s, Co. Donegal. It was a bustling event with close to 300 athletes from all corners of the country converging to take part in the Sheephaven Sprint and Half Distance triathlons. The backdrop of Donegal’s stunning scenery added an extra charm to the races, providing a challenging sea swim along Downing’s beach, a demanding bike course with steep climbs and thrilling descents, and a hilly run route. These races have gained a well-deserved reputation for being among the most grueling triathlons in Ireland.
For many years, the Sheephaven 70.3 has been a beloved event, and the introduction of the Sprint distance this year added even more excitement to the mix. It’s great to see new challenges being embraced alongside the established favorites, creating an inclusive and vibrant triathlon community in the region. The dedication and passion of the athletes and volunteers, combined with the picturesque setting, truly make these races standout experiences in the world of triathlon.
Speaking after the event Race Director Liam Tinny said ” It was a fantastic event and big thanks needs to go the many club members, family and people in the Rosguill & Fanad community that volunteered to help run the event. This year Letterkenny 24/7 partnered with Donegal Volunteer Centre & bused over 50 volunteers from Letterkenny to various locations along the race route. The positive energy and professionalism of all the volunteers was appreciated by the competitors. Thanks to John Curran and the team in the volunteer Centre and everyone else that helped us along”
Liam also expressed thanks to the Gardaí, Triathlon Ireland staff, First Aiders, and Sheephaven Sub Aqua club members that assisted on the day. Gabriel Larkin and Eric Korba captured the events in video and photography.
A big Thank You to the Downing’s Bay Hotel and staff for their generous support and sponsorship of our event. Staff are always there to help in any way possible.
