What a Race! Try-a-Tri/Super Sprint 2023 (some some weekly notes)

A superb day for racing greeted competitors on Sunday morning, and the ensuing events did not fail to disappoint. Try-a-Tri and Supersprint 2023 is done and dusted following some spectacular performances. We look forward to seeing everyone back again for Gartan 2023 (sign up here).

Try-a-Tri competitors took on the 200m swim, 13k cycle, and 3km run. Declan Ferry is our Try-a-Try Champion for 2023. Despite being 14th out of the pool, he clawed everyone back to to take home the first place medal with a time of 35:33. Keelan McKinney of Northwest TC was home in second place with a time of 37:19 while Brendan Boggs of Strabane Triathlon Club completed the podium, with a time of 41.40. In the female race Laura McElwaine was home first with an impressive time of 45:48 that included an outstanding swim time of 3:06. 24/7’s own Aoife McEldowney was second with 46:28, another impressive swim time of 3:11, while Eva Doherty was hot on her heels in third place with 47:04.

The Super Sprint event was also hotly contested. International Paratriathlete Chloe MacCombe put in an impressive performance to claim first place in the special category with 39:14, and her sister Judith not far behind her with a time of 41:57.

In the female Super Sprint event, Amy Lundy from Northwest TC came home first after storming through the course with her club mates Kirsty Downey (2nd) and Doreen McGee (3rd) pushing her to the finishing line. The male section of the race saw Philip Loughlin of Northwest TC first across the line in 36:05, with an amazing swim time of 5:07, followed by his clubmate Ryan Lundy (37:55) and 24/7’s Mervyn McDowell with a time of 38:59. Well done to all the club members who completed the grueling Donegal Bay Sportive on Saturday.

This week’s training schedule:

Monday 6.30/6.45pm: Speed Session on the track at the Aura. Warm up at 6.30pm and on track for 6.45pm sharp.

Wednesday 7pm-8pm: Lane swimming at the Aura. Online booking/paying available on https://letterkenny247.com/.

Thursday 6.45pm – Brick session at Foxhall. This is our first brick of 2023. Starts at 6.45pm sharp. More details in WhatsApp group during the week.

Saturday: Two groups for club cycle 8am and 8.30am. 8am group will be 3hrs plus averaging from 26-28kph and faster if you think you’re able. Routes will be posted in advance. 8.30am group, route will be decided when everyone turns up so we can see numbers and abilities. Most recent cycle was 90mins average speed 20 to 24kph.
